One in six Singaporeans suffers from some form of mental illness according to past national surveys on mental health. These figures, however, mean nothing to a public who cannot see the illness. Believing that the right exposure promotes knowledge and understanding, photojournalists Lim Chin Ping and Adeline Ong embarked on a project to put a face to mental illness.
On their visits to Sunlove Home and Surya Home, two rehabilitation homes located off Buangkok Green, they crossed paths with almost 400 people suffering from mental illness. Some suffered mental breakdowns in the prime of their lives while others were born mentally subnormal.
Out of Sight Out of Mind is a photo documentary that was done over a five-month period from October 2008 to February 2009. It shares the stories of patients living in rehabilitation homes.
